Wood burning stoves and appliances are designed to run at a higher temperature than conventional open fires. To maximise efficiency airflow both in and out of the appliance is controlled by dampers and air-tight seals.
Because wood burning appliances are capable of generating considerable heat when running 'fully open', anything from 4 kW to 30 kW being typical, they are often operated with air input restricted so as to conserve fuel. This can cause a build up of impurities within the unit which not only cause damage but can lead to exhaust gases and micro-particles seeping into the room.
Annual inspection, cleaning and, where necessary, servicing of both the appliance and flue is therefore essential. Gele Sweep has the latest CCTV chimney and flue inspection equipment to help pinpoint problems. The image below illustrates how a combination of build up of flammable creosote combined with debris from nesting birds could contribute to serious and damaging chimney fire.
